LOS ANGELES (Sept. 9, 2026) — More than 5,000 leaders and public figures from entertainment, academia, literature, government, business, religion and civic life have joined an open letter rejecting the accusation that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and warning that the charge has become a dangerous vehicle for scapegoating Jews and fueling antisemitism around the world.

Released today by Creative Community for Peace (CCFP) in partnership with Yossi Klein Halevi, Rabbi Yitz Greenberg, Rabbi Micha Odenheimer, and Professor Jonathan Karp (the authors of the letter), the initiative brings together a broad coalition spanning politics and public policy, academia and scholarship, entertainment and media, and religious and civic leadership.

Among the political and public-policy figures signing the letter are former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson; former Canadian Minister of Justice and Attorney General Irwin Cotler; former UK Cabinet minister Nadhim Zahawi; former U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie; former senior U.S. diplomat Elliott Abrams; and former White House Council of Economic Advisers Chair Jason Furman. The letter comes amid a surge in antisemitic incidents worldwide and follows a report by the UN Human Rights Council’s much-criticized Independent International Commission of Inquiry accusing Israel of deliberately targeting Palestinian children as evidence of “genocidal intent.”

In 2025, physical assaults against Jews in the United States reached their highest level on record. The year included deadly violence such as the shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., and the firebombing of an Israeli hostage vigil in Boulder, Colorado. Nearly half of all antisemitic incidents recorded in the United States that year were connected to Israel or Zionism, while other violent antisemitic attacks occur around the world, such as the Hannukah massacre in Bondi Beach, Australia.

Since October 7, 2023, anti-Israel protests and activism around the world have repeatedly been accompanied by rhetoric and actions that are extremist and antisemitic in nature. Signatories of this letter proclaim that the disingenuous genocide accusation has become the most dangerous expression of that phenomenon, lending a veneer of legal and moral authority to a charge that has fueled the harassment, exclusion and violence against Jews around the globe.

Former Canadian Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Irwin Cotler said: “The genocide libel is a case study in the longstanding – and intensified post-October 7^th – historical, moral, legal and normative inversions of fact, law and history.”

Central to the letter is the meaning of the word “genocide” itself. Under the 1948 Genocide Convention, genocide requires “specific intent” to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. This is an exceptionally demanding legal standard that goes beyond knowledge that civilian deaths, widespread destruction or even the destruction of part of a group may result. It requires an intent to bring about the group’s destruction as such. The signatories argue that applying the term to Israel without regard for that standard has turned one of international law’s gravest concepts into a political accusation.

The letter states: “A crucial difference between war as tragedy and war as genocide is intent. In this war, only one side intended to commit genocide, and that is Hamas.”

Ambassador (ret.) Deborah E. Lipstadt, Ph.D. said: “Those who accuse Israel of genocide, a very specific crime with a legally specific definition, are fulfilling the dictum attributed to the Nazi propagandist, Josef Goebbels. “If you tell a lie and keep repeating it enough, people will eventually come to believe it.” By October 10th, accusations of genocide were common, even before Israel set foot in Gaza. Then it was extremist voices who made this charge. Now, people have come to believe the lie and to mindlessly repeat it.”

The signatories acknowledge that there is legitimate debate over Israel’s conduct of the war and express pain over the loss of innocent life. But they state that such debate should not be conflated with the charge of genocide.

Ari Ingel, Executive Director of Creative Community for Peace, said, “We see every day how artists and cultural figures shape the way millions of people understand the world. That influence carries real consequences. Mark Ruffalo is a striking example. In 2021, he acknowledged that accusing Israel of genocide was ‘not accurate,’ ‘inflammatory’ and ‘being used to justify antisemitism.’ Five years later, he is again broadcasting the same libelous accusation to his millions of followers.

“When someone with that kind of reach repeatedly lends his platform and credibility to an accusation this incendiary it helps create an atmosphere in which Jews are increasingly shunned, harassed and attacked under the banner of anti-Israel activism. Criticism of Israel and its government is entirely legitimate. Falsely branding the Jewish state as genocidal carries consequences, and Jews around the world are living with them.”

The letter places the current accusation within a longer history of false claims about Jews and warns against allowing such rhetoric to become normalized in public life.

Rabbi David Wolpe said, “Lies about Jews lead to persecuting them. Whether they spring from ignorance or malice, let’s stop the lie now.”

The letter concludes, “We urge our fellow Jews and our non-Jewish friends to treat the accusation of genocide with revulsion – as the latest in a long history of lies about the Jewish people. ‘A lie has no legs,’ notes the ancient Hebrew proverb.”

We the undersigned are outraged and sickened by the latest blood libel to be inflicted on the Jewish people: the lie that Israel committed “genocide” in Gaza. We reject this accusation with contempt.

There is a vigorous debate within the Jewish community over aspects of how this war was fought, and that is a sign of moral health. So is our pain over every innocent life lost. But we must unite in repudiating the lie of genocide. 

The unprecedented combat conditions of the war – hundreds of kilometers of tunnels, thousands of boobytrapped homes – the conflating of combatants with “journalists” and “human rights workers,” the ratio of civilian-to-terrorist casualties, considered low for asymmetrical urban warfare, the absence of mass starvation despite repeated claims of imminent catastrophe, the warnings given to civilians before attack: All these factors were erased in the eagerness to indict Israel for genocide.

A crucial difference between war as tragedy and war as genocide is intent. In this war, only one side intended to commit genocide, and that is Hamas. 

To accuse Israel of genocide, the massacre of October 7 has been systematically downplayed, while Israeli actions have been distorted and amplified. Israel went to war on October 8 not out of vengeance, as its detractors claim, but to break the Iranian-led siege of terror enclaves on its borders, and to restore its deterrence, without which it cannot survive in the long term in the Middle East. Thousands of rockets and missiles were fired at Israel in the weeks following the massacre, while Hamas starved and tortured 250 Israelis, some of whom were murdered in captivity.

The classic definition of genocide has been changed to apply only to the Gaza war – just as anti-Israel NGOs changed the definition of apartheid and colonialism to apply only to Israel.

Already on October 8, as Israel was still fighting terrorists within its border communities and hadn’t yet begun burying its dead, anti-Zionists began raising the cry of “genocide.” In fact, Israel’s enemies have been accusing it of genocide for decades. 

The accusation of genocide has become a pretext for excluding, attacking and even murdering Jews around the world. Its purpose is to delegitimize Jewish self-determination and to turn the only Jewish state into the world’s arch criminal and pariah.

The bitter irony is that Israel, home to half the world’s Jews, is the only country to face a sustained war of attempted genocide – from its inception in 1948 until today.

We note with astonishment but not surprise the overwhelming silence of Israel’s defamers in the face of the atrocities of Iran – perhaps 30,000 civilians murdered in two days, one of the great crimes of our time. Anti-Zionism is not the defender of conscience but its betrayer.

“Mark Ruffalo’s rhetoric has increasingly crossed the line from criticism of Israel into extremist and antisemitic messaging.

For nearly a decade, Ruffalo has supported BDS and campaigns to isolate and demonize Israel. In 2021, he accused Israel of committing ‘genocide,’ then apologized and admitted that the claim was ‘not accurate,’ ‘inflammatory,’ and was ‘being used to justify antisemitism.’

Instead of becoming more careful with his words, he has repeatedly doubled down on his extremism, leading to his latest antisemitic attack on Larry and David Ellison.

Ruffalo describes Ellison as a ‘classic oligarch,’ warns about people ‘consolidating the wealth of the world for their own power and concentrated dominance,’ raises the specter of control over one of the world’s largest media companies, and invokes ‘profoundly scary’ technology that could one day be ‘used on you,’ recklessly insinuating that the Ellisons have designs to brutalize people worldwide.

Taken together, his statements echo some of the oldest antisemitic conspiracy theories in history, depicting Jews as a wealthy and sinister elite who accumulate control over media, money and power, then use that control against society.

This is also part of a broader pattern of extremism.

Over the past two years, Ruffalo has amplified claims to his millions of followers that 14,000 babies in Gaza would die within 48 hours and that Israel had actually killed 680,000 Palestinians, including 380,000 children under five. He repeatedly pushes accusations of “genocide,” “apartheid” and “famine” to millions of followers, almost always without correction when those claims prove false, are wildly exaggerated, unsupported or are preposterous.

Ruffalo now says accusations of antisemitism against him are ‘fundamentally dishonest.’ Intent does not erase impact. Repeatedly amplifying inflammatory falsehoods and rhetoric that mirrors historic antisemitic tropes helps normalize the violent anti-Jewish hatred we are seeing take hold once again around the world, regardless of how he chooses to describe his own motives.

Point blank, he has been warned before about the consequences of this rhetoric, yet continues contributing to the toxic antisemitic atmosphere we are witnessing today. That makes him culpable.

His argument increasingly fuses hostility toward Israel and Zionism with Jewish-associated wealth, media ownership, oligarchic power and ominous warnings about concentrated control into a single narrative.  Those echoes are impossible to ignore.

Hollywood should not accept this kind of rhetoric from anyone.

Mark Ruffalo should retract these remarks and apologize, and nobody in Hollywood should platform him until he does.”

LOS ANGELES (April 15, 2026) — More than 1,000 leaders from the entertainment industry have signed an open letter by the non-profit entertainment industry organization Creative Community For Peace in support of the continued inclusion of Israel in the Eurovision Song Contest and in support of the contestants.

The initial letter was issued in response to campaigns calling on the European Broadcasting Union to exclude Israel from the event and urging participating countries and artists to withdraw.

At the time, Scooter Braun said, “Music is a place for unity not division. It is a language that should always bring us together. Artists should never be discriminated against for who they are, who they love, or where they’re born. These boycott efforts do nothing but distract from the uplifting and unifying power of music – something we need now more than ever.”

While Gene Simmons said, “Music unites people from all backgrounds. It’s the one language that everyone can understand. It’s a beautiful thing and a great way to bring people together. Those advocating to exclude an Israeli singer from Eurovision don’t move the needle towards peace, but only further divide the world.”

And Mayim Bialik said, “After a horrendous violent attack on Israeli civilians, calls for boycotts and excluding Israeli artists from international events simply because they are Israeli is abhorrent and shameful. Targeting Israeli musicians in this way tarnishes the unifying spirit that is Eurovision.”

The letter highlights Eurovision’s unique ability to unify people from diverse backgrounds and music’s capacity to effect positive change in the world. It states that the annual event, with more viewers than the Super Bowl, is a celebration of unity and should not be used as a tool for politics.

Hundreds more entertainment industry leaders have now added their names.

Jerry O’Connell said, “Music should bring us together. No artist should be silenced for where they are from. These boycott efforts destroy the very connections the arts are meant to build.”

Sharon Osbourne said, “Artists and culture are being dragged into the angry, misinformed politics of the moment. Attempts to exclude Israelis from the international stage twist art into a tool of division and erode the shared humanity that the arts are meant to preserve.  I’ve watched this play out for over three years, and it just breaks my heart.”

The statement delivers a loud message from the entertainment industry unequivocally voicing support for Israel’s inclusion in Eurovision, standing with the contest’s participants, and rejecting calls for a boycott.

We, the undersigned members of the entertainment industry, are writing to express our support for Israel’s continued inclusion in the Eurovision Song Contest.

We have been shocked and disappointed to see some members of the entertainment community calling for Israel to be banished from the Contest for responding to the greatest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.

October 7th was a day in which a music festival meant to celebrate life was attacked by Hamas and saw 364 innocent civilians killed, hundreds maimed and brutalized, over 40 festivalgoers taken hostage, and many raped.

Israel is fighting a war against a European Union-designated terrorist group that once again broke a ceasefire that day, and then went on to slaughter over 1,200 people. This current round of fighting is not a war that Israel wanted or started. To punish Israel would be an inversion of justice.

Israel also has a long and storied history in Eurovision. This includes winning the Contest in 1978, 1979, 1998, and 2018 and having a diverse group of contestants representing the country, including Palestinians, Ethiopians, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Israel then hosted the Contest in 1979, 1999, and 2019. In fact, Eurovision fans voted “Dare to Dream,” the 64th Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, the best Eurovision production of the decade.

Furthermore, we believe that unifying events such as singing competitions are crucial to help bridge our cultural divides and unite people of all backgrounds through their shared love of music.

The annual Eurovision Song Contest embodies this unifying spirit. Every year, millions of people across Europe and around the world join in a massive display of cultural exchange and celebration of music.

Those who are calling for Israel’s exclusion are subverting the spirit of the Contest and turning it from a celebration of unity into a tool of politics.

We support your decision to reject the calls to expel Israel from the Contest and are looking forward to a successful and exciting Eurovision.

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 25, 2025 — More than 1,200 entertainment leaders signed an open letter released by the non-profit entertainment industry organizations Creative Community For Peace (CCFP) and The Brigade, rebuking the efforts of their colleagues to silence fellow entertainers and filmmakers.

The letter comes in response to the call to boycott all Israeli film and television companies, productions, festivals, and institutions – a de facto attempt to silence Jewish stories and ostracize Israeli filmmakers.

Its release comes on the heels of Paramount Studios publicly declaring its opposition to the boycott pledge, stating “we need more engagement, not less” and amid multiple calls to boycott Israeli cultural institutions.

This new open letter, signed by over 1,200 entertainment leaders, demonstrates an entertainment industry-wide opposition to chastising fellow artists and creatives.

Chairman and CEO of Saban Entertainment, Haim Saban, said: “Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed how storytelling can be an incredible tool to build understanding around our shared humanity. Excluding Israeli filmmakers because of their identity betrays that mission and undermines efforts for peace. True progress comes when we listen to one another, Israelis and Palestinians alike, and allow art to open doors that politics too often close.”

The boycott attempt coincides with an explosion of antisemitism and censorship of Israeli culture and artists around the world.

Just last month, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), the Israeli documentary, The Road Between Us: The Ultimate Rescue, was disinvited due to boycott pressure. After public outcry, the film was re-instated and went on to win the People’s Choice Award– demonstrating that art transcends political boundaries.

Actress Debra Messing said: “When artists boycott fellow artists based solely on their country of origin, it is blatant discrimination and a betrayal of our role as storytellers. History shows us that boycotts against Jews have long been a tool of authoritarian regimes—by joining this effort, these artists are knowingly or unknowingly aligning themselves with a dark legacy of antisemitism.”

Actress Mayim Bialik said: “Artists and creatives have a unique opportunity and responsibility to remind the world of our shared humanity. Boycotting filmmakers, studios, production companies and individuals simply because they are Israeli fuels division and contributes to a disturbing culture of marginalization. Additionally, this boycott pledge does nothing to end the war in Gaza, bring the hostages home, or help curb the alarming rise of antisemitism globally.”

The open letter also comes on the heels of the Israeli film, “The Sea,” winning the Best Feature award at the Ophir Awards (the Israeli Oscar’s), a film about a Palestinian boy on his way to visit the sea in Tel Aviv for the first time in his life. This story of Palestinian life was produced with support from the Israel Film Fund, which was specifically singled out for boycott.

Actress Rebecca De Mornay said: “Film institutions engage with countries all over the world, including those with serious controversies, yet Israel alone is singled out and condemned—for defending itself in a war it didn’t start, for trying to free hostages still being held, and for confronting an enemy still intent on its destruction. Boycotting Israeli film institutions isn’t a stand for justice, it’s a thinly veiled double-standard for Jews, and a hypocritical, unjust punishment of Israeli artists and films.”

CCFP Executive Director Ari Ingel stated, “while the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement presents itself as a social justice movement to those in the west, it is actually a political movement that seeks the defamation, delegitimization, and eventual elimination of the State of Israel.  The recent boycott pledge also contains blatant statements of misinformation, such as claiming that ICJ ruled that there was a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza, when they did no such thing.”

Ingel added, “the truth is that the film and television industry in Israel is a vibrant hub of collaboration between Jewish and Palestinian artists and filmmakers, who work closely together every single day to tell complex stories that entertain and inform both communities and the world — from Award winning series such as Our Boys, to the Ophir Best Picture winning The Sea, and to powerful documentaries such as Dead Sea Guardians. Silencing the voices of storytellers does nothing to advance peace. The very artists and filmmakers who work across divides, grapple with painful truths, and foster dialogue should be supported. The path to peace will not be paved by boycotts, censorship, or exclusion, but by supporting the courageous individuals who refuse to give up on coexistence. Because in the end, peace will be written not by those who divide, but by those who dare to create together.”

The letter states: “We know the power of film. We know the power of story. That is why we cannot stay silent when a story is turned into a weapon, when lies are dressed up as justice, and when artists are misled into amplifying antisemitic propaganda.”

A representative for the Brigade stated, “As entertainment professionals and members of the creative community, it is our responsibility to preserve artistic freedom and access regardless of political leanings or origins. The ability to collaborate, to exchange ideas and highlight artists is the backbone of our industry. When people call for blacklists, it hurts the very foundation that has fought over-zealous government actions and the squashing of human rights. We adamantly oppose the current virulent and ill-informed boycott movement fomenting in our community. The Israeli artistic community and businesses provide opportunities to elevate Jewish and Palestinian stories and voices. We are obligated to preserve this thriving community for artists and audiences around the world.”

The letter concludes: “We call on all our colleagues in the entertainment industry to reject this discriminatory and antisemitic boycott call that only adds yet another roadblock on the path to peace.”

To our fellow artists and the global film community,

We know the power of film. We know the power of story. That is why we cannot stay silent when a story is turned into a weapon, when lies are dressed up as justice, and when artists are misled into amplifying antisemitic propaganda.

The pledge circulated under the banner of “Film Workers for Palestine” is not an act of conscience. It is a document of misinformation that advocates for arbitrary censorship and the erasure of art.

To censor the very voices trying to find common ground and express their humanity, is wrong, ineffective, and a form of collective punishment.

Israel’s film industry includes groundbreaking, celebratory, and critical projects about Palestinians and Jews, which many of you have lauded and celebrated. Israel’s film community is restless, argumentative, and independent, where directors challenge ministers and many of the very festivals you target, consistently program dissent.

Israel’s entertainment industry is a vibrant hub of collaboration between Jewish and Palestinian artists and creatives, who work together every single day to tell complex stories that entertain and inform both communities and the world. Israeli film institutions are not government entities. They are often the loudest critics of government policy.

The pledge uses nebulous terms like ‘implicating’ and ‘complicity.’ Who will decide which Israeli filmmakers and film institutions are ‘complicit’? A McCarthyist committee with blacklists? Or is ‘complicity’ just a pretext to boycott all Israelis and Zionists — 95% of the world’s Jewish population — no matter what they create or believe?

History warns us. Censorship has been used to silence filmmakers before: Nazi Germany’s propaganda machine, Soviet censorship, and even Hollywood’s own blacklists. Every time it was dressed up as virtue. And every time it was oppression. Every time, its targets expanded.

We know that many of you have good intentions and believe you are standing for peace. But your names are being weaponized and tied to lies and discrimination. This pledge erases dissenting Israeli voices, legitimizes falsehoods, and shields Hamas from blame.

If you want peace, call for the immediate release of the remaining hostages. Support filmmakers who create dialogue across communities. Stand against Hamas.

Let art speak the whole truth.
