WHAT DOES “FREE PALESTINE” REALLY MEAN?

THE ANTI-ISRAEL MOVEMENT WANTS “FREE PALESTINE” TO SOUND SIMPLE. IT ISN’T.

“Free Palestine” has become one of the most recognizable political slogans in the world.

It can express concern for Palestinian civilians.

It can express support for Palestinian statehood.

It can also express something much more sweeping and much darker.

So before repeating the slogan, there is a question worth asking:

What exactly does “Free Palestine” mean?

AN INTENTIONALLY AMBIGUOUS SLOGAN

As journalist Jordyn Tilchen has previously written, the phrase “Free Palestine” is far more complicated than it sounds.

Free Palestine from what?

What borders are being envisioned?

Who governs this Palestinian state?

What happens to Hamas?

Does “freedom” mean two states — Israel and Palestine — living alongside one another?

Does it mean one binational state?

Or does it mean a Palestinian state replacing Israel entirely?

These are not minor details. They determine what “Free Palestine” actually means, and its ambiguity is precisely what has made the slogan so effective.

THE SAME THREE WORDS CAN DESCRIBE VERY DIFFERENT FUTURES

Imagine four people chanting “Free Palestine.”

One wants more humanitarian aid.

One wants an end to the fighting.

One supports an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

One believes Israel should cease to exist.

They are saying exactly the same words.

They are describing fundamentally different outcomes.

That ambiguity is part of the slogan’s power, and part of why the Palestinian movement championed the phrase.

FOR JEWS, THIS AMBIGUITY IS NOT ABSTRACT

Israel is the world’s only Jewish-majority state.

For Jews, it represents Jewish self-determination in their indigenous homeland after centuries of persecution, expulsion, and statelessness.

So when someone demands that Palestine be “freed,” the unanswered question becomes deeply consequential:

What happens to Israel and its people in the future being imagined?

WHAT THE PHRASE MEANS TO THE LEADERS OF THE PALESTINIAN MOVEMENT

Clearly, not everyone chanting “Free Palestine” wants Israel destroyed.

But by and large, the Palestinian diaspora, Jewish Voice for Peace, Hamas, Students for Justice in Palestine, and those guiding the Palestinian movement around the world understand exactly what the term really means.

It’s the eradication of the world’s only Jewish state.

For example, the chant “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” in Arabic is actually “From the water to the water, Palestine will be Arab.”

The mistranslation in English is intentional.

REAL-LIFE CONSEQUENCES

The darker meaning of the phrase cannot simply be dismissed as Jewish oversensitivity.

The phrase “Free Palestine” has accompanied actual violence against Jews in the United States, Canada, the UK, Australia, and elsewhere around the world.

For instance, in Washington in 2025, police said the man accused of killing two people at an AJC event shouted “Free, free Palestine” after his arrest.

In Boulder, less than two weeks later, prosecutors said an attacker threw Molotov cocktails at a gathering supporting Israeli hostages while yelling “Free Palestine,” killing an 82-year-old Jewish woman.

LET’S TALK ABOUT MACKLEMORE

When Macklemore shouts “Free Palestine” into a stadium microphone and thousands of people shout it back, there is no reason to assume everyone in that stadium means the same thing.

Some may envision Israelis and Palestinians eventually living peacefully in two states.

Many others, probably including the artist himself, envision a future in which Israel no longer exists.

LET’S TALK ABOUT ZACH BRYAN

Zach Bryan took the stage at Gillette Stadium wearing a “Free Palestine” shirt.

What did he mean by it?

Perhaps he means freedom.

Perhaps he means peace.

Perhaps he means Palestinian rights.

Those may genuinely be his intentions.

But many people in the audience may interpret his statement very differently.

A SLOGAN CAN UNITE PEOPLE WHO ACTUALLY DISAGREE

That is what makes “Free Palestine” unusually effective as a political slogan.

It allows people with incompatible visions to stand together beneath the same words.

A supporter of coexistence can say it.

A supporter of two states can say it.

Someone who wants Israel dismantled can say it.

For a few seconds, they can appear to be demanding the same thing.

They are not necessarily demanding the same thing at all.

IF YOU MEAN PEACE, SAY IT

The leaders of the anti-Israel movement understand this, but do the people chanting it?

If you mean humanitarian aid, say it.

If you mean Palestinian self-determination, define it.

If you support two states living side by side, say it clearly.

And if the political vision requires the disappearance of Israel, that should be stated clearly too.

Palestinians deserve a future of dignity and self-determination.

Israelis deserve security and self-determination.

A serious conversation about peace has to make room for both peoples and reject a slogan that simply builds another barrier to peace.

THEY DESERVE THE TRUTH.

Millions of parents and followers trust Ms. Rachel. With that trust comes responsibility.

When she shares claims about starving children in Gaza, the evidence deserves as much attention as the images.

Compassion matters. So does accuracy.

THE DEVASTATING IMAGES DON’T TELL THE REAL STORY.

Images of a few dozen severely malnourished children were circulated around the world as evidence of starvation in Gaza, but they omitted significant context.

As reported by The Free Press, images circulated by Ms. Rachel and others omitted critical information about the children’s underlying health conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, rickets and immune disorders.

Those children’s suffering was real. Sharing their images without medical context misled audiences.

THE CASE OF MARYAM DAWAS

One clear example of this deception.

In 2025, the Los Angeles Times described Maryam Dawas’s condition this way: “Doctors confirmed that her condition is solely the result of hunger and malnutrition.”

Her family’s subsequent fundraising campaign disclosed: “Maryam has a serious immune disorder that attacks her body every day, leaving her weak and vulnerable.”

Ms Rachel’s audience deserved that information.

MS. RACHEL’S RESPONSE? “WHY DOES THAT EVEN MATTER?”

It matters.

A serious underlying medical condition can affect a child’s weight, appearance and nutritional vulnerability.

It matters when an image is presented to millions of people as evidence of population-wide starvation.

And it matters when those images contribute to accusations against Israel that reverberate around the world.

MS. RACHEL TALKS ABOUT STARVATION. HER AUDIENCE DESERVES THE ACTUAL DATA.

A UNICEF-led team published its latest comprehensive nutrition analysis of Gaza in July 2026.

Using weight-for-height measurements, researchers found acute malnutrition in just 0.5% of the children surveyed.

The survey also found stunting in about 12% of children surveyed.

That is less than the Middle East and North Africa’s 15% to 26% stunting rate, according to the latest report on child malnutrition by UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and the World Bank.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL UNICEF FOUND

The UNICEF-led team’s presentation also revealed that Gaza now faces a new challenge: obesity and excess weight.

A leading researcher who has overseen teams collecting malnutrition data in the Horn of Africa remarked that she had “never seen” the emergence of obesity and excess weight in a place that was declared only a year earlier to be suffering from “famine.”

These findings paint a considerably more complicated picture than the one presented by Ms. Rachel and by the viral images.

THE WAY MALNUTRITION WAS MEASURED DURING THE WAR, WAS MISLEADING.

During the war, researchers said they had repeatedly been unable to collect weight-for-height data because of the conflict.

That meant assessments relied on the often inaccurate mid-upper-arm circumference, or MUAC, measurements.

Those arm measurements identified more than twice as many cases than there actually were.

Yannay Spitzer, an applied economist in Boston, told The Free Press that the survey results show that the IPC’s famine declaration rested on an erroneous assumption that undermines its validity.

“It’s just another example of how flawed the methodology was.”

THE FAMINE THAT NEVER WAS

The famine narrative originated with reports from the IPC, a UN-aligned body working closely with several anti-Israel NGOs.

In March 2024, it predicted that Gaza would enter famine within four months, claiming that 39% of the population faced emergency-level food insecurity and another 30% had already reached catastrophic—or famine—levels.

Those claims were later rejected by the IPC’s own Famine Review Committee (FRC), an independent body tasked with evaluating IPC findings. In a June review, the FRC concluded it was “not plausible” that Gaza had entered famine.

Ms. Rachel never mentions any of this.

FAMINE HAS DEFINED CRITERIA.

There are three conditions that must be met for a food crisis to qualify as famine.

One of those requirements is that the death rate per day exceeds 2 deaths per 10,000 people overall or 4 deaths per 10,000 children under five.

In Gaza, that would have required the number of deaths due to famine reaching 440 people or 134 children under five, per day.

Nothing remotely approaching that occurred.

In September 2025, Al Jazeera reported a total of 361 malnutrition deaths over two years of war.

But the vast majority suffered from severe underlying health conditions.

MS. RACHEL AND THE IPC RELIED ON HAMAS

The IPC relied on Hamas-provided data that failed to account for private-sector food entering Gaza, ignored locally sourced food, and grossly overestimated the number of people located in areas it labeled at risk of famine.

For instance, the IPC again warned of famine conditions in parts of Gaza in August 2025 — claims that once more failed to materialize.

An October 2025 report by the Global Nutrition Cluster, which coordinates emergency nutrition responses, found that the malnutrition figures in Gaza were 23% lower than those used by the IPC.

This discrepancy stemmed from data manipulation, meaning the IPC’s own threshold for famine was not met.

MS. RACHEL WANTS HER AUDIENCE TO “SPEAK THE TRUTH.”

 THAT STANDARD APPLIES TO HER, TOO.

The war in Gaza has caused tremendous suffering.

The public deserves more than viral photographs stripped of context and sweeping claims presented without scrutiny.

Every child deserves compassion.

Every humanitarian claim demands accuracy.

And an audience of millions deserves the full story.

WHO WAS ACTUALLY STARVING IN GAZA?

During the war, Israel facilitated nearly 1.87 million tons of aid into Gaza. After the October 2025 ceasefire, another 1.78+ million tons of food has entered, three times what the World Food Programme said was needed.

The Hostages Were the Ones Actually Famished

Former hostage Evyatar David, among the last captives freed, was filmed by Hamas digging his own grave. “You can see my body, I could barely move.” He and Guy Gilboa-Dalal “didn’t eat for three months.”

As he struggled, he could hear his guards “laughing, eating cakes and drinking tea.”

“They told us there is no food in Gaza, but we knew it’s not true, because we always saw the terrorists – they were fat and had muscles. We knew they were lying and starving us.”

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 9, 2026) — More than 5,000 leaders and public figures from entertainment, academia, literature, government, business, religion and civic life have joined an open letter rejecting the accusation that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza and warning that the charge has become a dangerous vehicle for scapegoating Jews and fueling antisemitism around the world.

Released today by Creative Community for Peace (CCFP) in partnership with Yossi Klein Halevi, Rabbi Yitz Greenberg, Rabbi Micha Odenheimer, and Professor Jonathan Karp (the authors of the letter), the initiative brings together a broad coalition spanning politics and public policy, academia and scholarship, entertainment and media, and religious and civic leadership.

Among the political and public-policy figures signing the letter are former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson; former Canadian Minister of Justice and Attorney General Irwin Cotler; former UK Cabinet minister Nadhim Zahawi; former U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie; former senior U.S. diplomat Elliott Abrams; and former White House Council of Economic Advisers Chair Jason Furman. The letter comes amid a surge in antisemitic incidents worldwide and follows a report by the UN Human Rights Council’s much-criticized Independent International Commission of Inquiry accusing Israel of deliberately targeting Palestinian children as evidence of “genocidal intent.”

In 2025, physical assaults against Jews in the United States reached their highest level on record. The year included deadly violence such as the shooting outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., and the firebombing of an Israeli hostage vigil in Boulder, Colorado. Nearly half of all antisemitic incidents recorded in the United States that year were connected to Israel or Zionism, while other violent antisemitic attacks occur around the world, such as the Hannukah massacre in Bondi Beach, Australia.

Since October 7, 2023, anti-Israel protests and activism around the world have repeatedly been accompanied by rhetoric and actions that are extremist and antisemitic in nature. Signatories of this letter proclaim that the disingenuous genocide accusation has become the most dangerous expression of that phenomenon, lending a veneer of legal and moral authority to a charge that has fueled the harassment, exclusion and violence against Jews around the globe.

Former Canadian Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Irwin Cotler said: “The genocide libel is a case study in the longstanding – and intensified post-October 7^th – historical, moral, legal and normative inversions of fact, law and history.”

Central to the letter is the meaning of the word “genocide” itself. Under the 1948 Genocide Convention, genocide requires “specific intent” to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group. This is an exceptionally demanding legal standard that goes beyond knowledge that civilian deaths, widespread destruction or even the destruction of part of a group may result. It requires an intent to bring about the group’s destruction as such. The signatories argue that applying the term to Israel without regard for that standard has turned one of international law’s gravest concepts into a political accusation.

The letter states: “A crucial difference between war as tragedy and war as genocide is intent. In this war, only one side intended to commit genocide, and that is Hamas.”

Ambassador (ret.) Deborah E. Lipstadt, Ph.D. said: “Those who accuse Israel of genocide, a very specific crime with a legally specific definition, are fulfilling the dictum attributed to the Nazi propagandist, Josef Goebbels. “If you tell a lie and keep repeating it enough, people will eventually come to believe it.” By October 10th, accusations of genocide were common, even before Israel set foot in Gaza. Then it was extremist voices who made this charge. Now, people have come to believe the lie and to mindlessly repeat it.”

The signatories acknowledge that there is legitimate debate over Israel’s conduct of the war and express pain over the loss of innocent life. But they state that such debate should not be conflated with the charge of genocide.

Ari Ingel, Executive Director of Creative Community for Peace, said, “We see every day how artists and cultural figures shape the way millions of people understand the world. That influence carries real consequences. Mark Ruffalo is a striking example. In 2021, he acknowledged that accusing Israel of genocide was ‘not accurate,’ ‘inflammatory’ and ‘being used to justify antisemitism.’ Five years later, he is again broadcasting the same libelous accusation to his millions of followers.

“When someone with that kind of reach repeatedly lends his platform and credibility to an accusation this incendiary it helps create an atmosphere in which Jews are increasingly shunned, harassed and attacked under the banner of anti-Israel activism. Criticism of Israel and its government is entirely legitimate. Falsely branding the Jewish state as genocidal carries consequences, and Jews around the world are living with them.”

The letter places the current accusation within a longer history of false claims about Jews and warns against allowing such rhetoric to become normalized in public life.

Rabbi David Wolpe said, “Lies about Jews lead to persecuting them. Whether they spring from ignorance or malice, let’s stop the lie now.”

The letter concludes, “We urge our fellow Jews and our non-Jewish friends to treat the accusation of genocide with revulsion – as the latest in a long history of lies about the Jewish people. ‘A lie has no legs,’ notes the ancient Hebrew proverb.”

“We will not allow this lie to stand.”

We the undersigned are outraged and sickened by the latest blood libel to be inflicted on the Jewish people: the lie that Israel committed “genocide” in Gaza. We reject this accusation with contempt.

There is a vigorous debate within the Jewish community over aspects of how this war was fought, and that is a sign of moral health. So is our pain over every innocent life lost. But we must unite in repudiating the lie of genocide.

The unprecedented combat conditions of the war – hundreds of kilometers of tunnels, thousands of boobytrapped homes – the conflating of combatants with “journalists” and “human rights workers,” the ratio of civilian-to-terrorist casualties, considered low for asymmetrical urban warfare, the absence of mass starvation despite repeated claims of imminent catastrophe, the warnings given to civilians before attack: All these factors were erased in the eagerness to indict Israel for genocide.

A crucial difference between war as tragedy and war as genocide is intent. In this war, only one side intended to commit genocide, and that is Hamas.

To accuse Israel of genocide, the massacre of October 7 has been systematically downplayed, while Israeli actions have been distorted and amplified. Israel went to war on October 8 not out of vengeance, as its detractors claim, but to break the Iranian-led siege of terror enclaves on its borders, and to restore its deterrence, without which it cannot survive in the long term in the Middle East. Thousands of rockets and missiles were fired at Israel in the weeks following the massacre, while Hamas starved and tortured 250 Israelis, some of whom were murdered in captivity.

The classic definition of genocide has been changed to apply only to the Gaza war – just as anti-Israel NGOs changed the definition of apartheid and colonialism to apply only to Israel.

Already on October 8, as Israel was still fighting terrorists within its border communities and hadn’t yet begun burying its dead, anti-Zionists began raising the cry of “genocide.” In fact, Israel’s enemies have been accusing it of genocide for decades.

The accusation of genocide has become a pretext for excluding, attacking and even murdering Jews around the world. Its purpose is to delegitimize Jewish self-determination and to turn the only Jewish state into the world’s arch criminal and pariah.

The bitter irony is that Israel, home to half the world’s Jews, is the only country to face a sustained war of attempted genocide – from its inception in 1948 until today.

We note with astonishment but not surprise the overwhelming silence of Israel’s defamers in the face of the atrocities of Iran – perhaps 30,000 civilians murdered in two days, one of the great crimes of our time. Anti-Zionism is not the defender of conscience but its betrayer.

We urge our fellow Jews and our non-Jewish friends to treat the accusation of genocide with revulsion – as the latest in a long history of lies about the Jewish people. “A lie has no legs,” notes the ancient Hebrew proverb.

The Radical Movement Rallying Around Mark Ruffalo

The headline announcing Mark Ruffalo’s latest line of defense was striking. More than 170 Jewish artists had rallied around the actor, denouncing an “outrageous smear campaign” and rejecting accusations that his rhetoric about the Ellison family and the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger trafficked in antisemitic themes.

Read the names and the letter itself, and a different picture emerges.

There are recognizable Hollywood figures among the signatories, including Joel Coen, Tony Kushner, Hannah Einbinder, Ilana Glazer and others. Of the 177 signatories, fewer than half are entertainment figures. The list also contains a significant collection of anti-Israel academics, political organizers, antizionist activists and rabbis whose anti-Israel activism long predates this controversy.

Many have deep connections to the extremist antizionist group, Jewish Voice for Peace.

Rebecca Vilkomerson spent a decade as JVP’s executive director. Phyllis Bennis has served on its board. Rabbi Alissa Wise held senior leadership roles there. Rabbis David Mivasair and Linda Holtzman have served on its Rabbinical Council. Other signatories include longtime BDS advocates and antizionist activists such as Sarah Schulman, Udi Aloni and Naomi Klein.

This context changes how the letter should be understood.

It reads less like an organic uprising of Hollywood’s Jewish community and more like the mobilization of an established antizionist activist network around a celebrity whose rhetoric has increasingly converged with its own.

JVP describes itself as the world’s largest progressive anti-Zionist Jewish organization. Its record tells us what that politics has meant in practice.

On October 7, 2023, while Israelis were still being massacred, raped, and kidnapped and the scale of the Hamas massacre was still coming into view, JVP blamed “Israeli apartheid and occupation” and U.S. complicity as “the source of all this violence.”

Four days later, it accused Israel of launching a “genocidal war” and called on Americans to stop the “imminent genocide” of Palestinians.

The mobilization followed immediately.

JVP organized protests at Senator Chuck Schumer’s home, and with IfNotNow they organized the Capitol demonstration that JVP itself celebrated as a “Jews against Genocide” rally and “the largest Jewish protest in solidarity with Palestinians ever.” Hundreds were arrested. All of this before Israel’s major ground offensive began.

Then came the campuses.

During the 2024 encampment movement, JVP said its student chapters helped organize at least 47 encampments around the country. It celebrated encampments at more than 100 campuses as “liberated zones” and “popular universities for Gaza.”

Columbia suspended its JVP and Students for Justice in Palestine chapters in November 2023 for repeated violations of university event policies.

This is the radical political ecosystem heavily represented among Ruffalo’s defenders in this letter.

It also represents a very small ideological current within American Jewry.

A 2025 national survey commissioned by Jewish Federations of North America found that only 7 percent of American Jews identified as antizionist, while 88 percent said Israel has the right to exist as a Jewish and democratic state.

The overwhelming majority of American Jews support the continued existence of a Jewish state. Yet the Ruffalo letter uses Jewish identity to make a small ideological minority appear more representative than it is.

The letter barely engages with the substance of the accusations against Ruffalo. Instead, in a sleight of hand, it replaces scrutiny of his words with a debate about Israel and Gaza.

But the issue was always Ruffalo’s rhetoric.

He fused the Jewish State, Jewish executives, immense wealth, media ownership, “profoundly scary technology” and warnings about concentrated power into a single ominous narrative suggesting that the machinery being assembled by these people could someday be “used on you.”

Antisemitic conspiracy theories have long portrayed Jews as using wealth, hidden influence and control over media or institutions to manipulate society from behind the scenes. Ruffalo’s language is dressed in contemporary political terms, but the structure of the conspiracy is painfully familiar.

The new open letter responds by going further.

“The AI road to WarnerMount runs through Gaza,” it declares. It describes Larry Ellison and his “corrupt cohort” gaining control over what Americans watch while watching us in return. It alleges that the TikTok transaction was motivated in large part by a desire to promote “pro-Israel propaganda.” It connects Gaza, Israel, wealth, media control, surveillance and technological domination into one sweeping theory. The echoes of classic antisemitic conspiracy literature, such as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, are hard to ignore.

The fixation becomes particularly striking when you examine the actual financing of the Warner transaction.

Paramount’s SEC filings identify Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, an Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund vehicle and an investment vehicle of the Qatar Investment Authority among the institutional investors participating in the equity syndication.

Yet somehow there is no road to WarnerMount running through Riyadh, Abu Dhabi or Doha. Their geopolitical theory travels almost exclusively through Israel.

The treatment of Safra Catz is equally revealing. Ruffalo circulated an edited video suggesting she was celebrating frightening technology being used against Palestinians. A spokesperson for Catz later clarified the technology she referenced was intended to help rescue hostages kidnapped during Hamas’s October 7 attack. The signatories ignore her explanation and preserve the most inflammatory interpretation possible.

The open letter also leans heavily on another device, the “as a Jew” defense.

Its signatories invoke their Jewish identities, cite polling of American Jews and effectively ask how their argument could possibly enable antisemitism when Jews themselves are making it.

A Jewish signature does not make an extreme claim more factual. It does not make a conspiracy theory less conspiratorial. Jews, like members of every community, can excuse prejudice or provide cover for it. The substance of the rhetoric determines whether it is antisemitic, not the identity of the person delivering it.

Nor are intent and impact the same thing.

Ruffalo may sincerely believe that he is standing up for Palestinians. So may many of the people defending him. Sincerity does not render false claims true or inflammatory rhetoric harmless.

A person can believe he is advocating for Palestinians while spreading falsehoods, embracing extreme claims and contributing to a climate in which hatred toward Jews becomes increasingly normalized. Both can be true.

That responsibility is magnified when the speaker commands an audience of more than 20 million people.

Public figures do not get to judge the consequences of their speech solely by declaring what was in their hearts. Words travel. Narratives spread. And when those narratives tell millions of people that wealthy Jewish and pro-Israel executives are assembling control of media, technology and information as part of a frightening project that will eventually be turned against them, the impact cannot be waved away with assurances of good intentions.

Perhaps the most remarkable line in the open letter is its declaration that the “tired playbook” of raising antisemitism has “run its course.”

Antisemitism does not cease to exist when acknowledging it interferes with a preferred political narrative. And it does not receive a moral exemption because a group of Jewish artists and activists is willing to defend it.

Calling every criticism of Israel antisemitic would be wrong. Calling every accusation of antisemitism a “smear” is just as intellectually dishonest.

The letter does more than defend Ruffalo. It tries to legitimize the very rhetoric it was written to excuse.

The headlines say Jewish Hollywood rallied to Mark Ruffalo. The names, the history and the politics tell a far more revealing story.

Statement from Ari Ingel, Executive Director, Creative Community for Peace regarding Mark Ruffalo’s latest comments:

“Mark Ruffalo’s rhetoric has increasingly crossed the line from criticism of Israel into extremist and antisemitic messaging.

For nearly a decade, Ruffalo has supported BDS and campaigns to isolate and demonize Israel. In 2021, he accused Israel of committing ‘genocide,’ then apologized and admitted that the claim was ‘not accurate,’ ‘inflammatory,’ and was ‘being used to justify antisemitism.’

Instead of becoming more careful with his words, he has repeatedly doubled down on his extremism, leading to his latest antisemitic attack on Larry and David Ellison.

Ruffalo describes Ellison as a ‘classic oligarch,’ warns about people ‘consolidating the wealth of the world for their own power and concentrated dominance,’ raises the specter of control over one of the world’s largest media companies, and invokes ‘profoundly scary’ technology that could one day be ‘used on you,’ recklessly insinuating that the Ellisons have designs to brutalize people worldwide.

Taken together, his statements echo some of the oldest antisemitic conspiracy theories in history, depicting Jews as a wealthy and sinister elite who accumulate control over media, money and power, then use that control against society.

This is also part of a broader pattern of extremism.

Over the past two years, Ruffalo has amplified claims to his millions of followers that 14,000 babies in Gaza would die within 48 hours and that Israel had actually killed 680,000 Palestinians, including 380,000 children under five. He repeatedly pushes accusations of “genocide,” “apartheid” and “famine” to millions of followers, almost always without correction when those claims prove false, are wildly exaggerated, unsupported or are preposterous.

Ruffalo now says accusations of antisemitism against him are ‘fundamentally dishonest.’ Intent does not erase impact. Repeatedly amplifying inflammatory falsehoods and rhetoric that mirrors historic antisemitic tropes helps normalize the violent anti-Jewish hatred we are seeing take hold once again around the world, regardless of how he chooses to describe his own motives.

Point blank, he has been warned before about the consequences of this rhetoric, yet continues contributing to the toxic antisemitic atmosphere we are witnessing today. That makes him culpable.

His argument increasingly fuses hostility toward Israel and Zionism with Jewish-associated wealth, media ownership, oligarchic power and ominous warnings about concentrated control into a single narrative. Those echoes are impossible to ignore.

Hollywood should not accept this kind of rhetoric from anyone.

Mark Ruffalo should retract these remarks and apologize, and nobody in Hollywood should platform him until he does.”
